New Students, Old Demands, New Models:  Understanding Today’s “Disruptive” Environment in Higher Education

There seems to be constant talk of higher education being hit with a wave of “disruptive innovation.” But what does this really mean?  Colleges and universities are under intense pressure to increase student success, be faster about it, and lower costs while doing it.  Understanding the history and unique missions of our institutions gives us a chance to assess many of the emerging innovations intended to address those pressures, from online/blended approaches, to MOOCs, to competency-based models, to badges and alternate credentials.  Dr. Robinson’s keynote will provide an engaged conversation on these salient topics.

Engaging Students in Virtual Classroom Spaces: Using Blackboard Collaborate for Teaching & Learning

Foundational Session

During this session participants will learn about the teaching and learning benefits of an online collaboration platform. Presenters will share their experiences using Blackboard Collaborate in teaching nontraditional learners. This hands-on session will be conducted in its entirety using Blackboard Collaborate. Participants will be invited to actively participate in this virtual classroom, interact with presenters and peers within the session, and reflect on how virtual classrooms could apply to their teaching and learning practices. 

Keeping It Real In the Online Classroom: Authentic & Performance Based Assessment Strategies in Action

Session One

This presentation will explore best practices and tools for integrating authentic and performance-based assessment into the online classroom. Through a number of exemplars, participants will discover techniques for creating high-value learning activities which will allow them to apply classroom learning to real-world professional situations.

Improving Student Engagement - Teaching with Mobile Technology

The 2013 ECAR Study reveals, “Students recognize the value of [mobile] technology but still need guidance when it comes to better using it for academics.” But, the question remains, are students more engaged? Framingham State University shares their experience of four faculty who innovated with technology, their research, process and conclusions.

Exploring Online Academic Coaching for Adult Students: A Collaborative, Multi-Institution Grant-Funded Project

Session One

Academic coaching is a growing student service most often delivered face-to-face. However, alternative approaches to service delivery have the potential to facilitate greater access for non-traditional students. This session will explore a multi-institution, collaborative, online academic coaching program geared toward adult students. Challenges, successes, and technologies implemented will be shared.

Faculty engaged in online instruction are often overwhelmed with the level of online engagement necessary to develop and facilitate a rigorous course. This roundtable will provide educators with the opportunity to share successful strategies as well as pitfalls for maintaining rigor and online engagement within the very real context of managing workload concerns.

Using iPads In and Out of the Classroom

Session Two

There is heavy demand by both faculty and students to use tablets in the classrooms, as faculty embrace pedagogies to engage students in active learning. In this presentation we will see a handful of apps in action that faculty use to push traditional lecture and content online, enhance close readings in class, allow students to share spontaneous group work, and make homework review accessible after class.

Enhancing Courses and Programs with ePortfolio

Session Two

Through an overview of how ePortfolio is integrated into the Tunxis Community College Business Administration program, participants will learn how to use ePortfolio in their courses for assessment and student engagement. We will also explore interdisciplinary practices of ePortfolio that the leadership team developed through the Connect to Learning Grant.

Seeking Alternatives to High-Cost Textbooks: A Case Study of the UMass Amherst Open Education Initiative

The high cost and lack of availability of commercial print textbooks is a major concern for both students and their parents. To address these concerns, the Provost’s Office and the University Libraries of the University of Massachusetts Amherst launched the Open Education Initiative (OEI) in the Spring of 2011, having saved over $1 million to date. This model has an implementation strategy that is easy for others to adopt.

“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”: Strategies for Making the Transition from On-Ground to Online Teaching

Foundational Session

This presentation will highlight some of the strategies that Charter Oak State College has adopted for translating traditional on-ground teaching methods to an online environment.  In on-ground courses, faculty already know how to engage their students by way of “traditional” face-to-face methods.  But when a course moves online, adapting “traditional” methods simply requires using those methods as a compass.  Online education may be the future, but entering the future does not mean forgetting the past.

iTeach, You Teach, We All Learn Together

Session Three

This four-person panel will discuss the design, development and delivery of iTeach Essentials, a nine-week, fully online faculty training course that addresses effective online pedagogy and technology use. The panel will offer faculty, student, college and system perspectives on the course.

Mobile Matters: The Value, Function, and Needs of Mobile Ecosystems in Higher Education

This presentation will explore 21st century mobile tools and the considerations that arise for the technological and pedagogical footprint each campus must consider in supporting mobile learning. A review of current research will inform a discussion around the use, needs, and benefits of mobile tools on student learning.

Global 2.0: Leveraging Technology to Engage Learners in Study Abroad Programs

Session Three

With study abroad programs on the rise and the proliferation of the Internet reaching some ofthe most remote locations, instructors are incorporating innovative uses of technology into global education curricula. This session will provide an in-depth look at two Global Community courses that have harnessed technology, including the use of social media, to engage learners before, during and after the study abroad experience. Participants will leave this session with an understanding of the uses, challenges, and benefits of designing a course that incorporates technology into the study abroad experience.

This presentation will cover tips and techniques for producing effective software demonstrations. Topics will include: How to get a great screen capture, how to edit the timing of screen elements, how to record high quality audio narration, and how to edit narration.

Flipping Your Classroom: Techniques & Tools for Teaching & Learning
Presented by Jay Rozgony and Suzanna Klaf
Session Four

This session will explore “flipped” pedagogy, a teaching technique that has been getting a lot of buzz. “Flips” often refer to replacing traditional lecture methods with active learning activities that engage students in the classroom. Participants will learn the how to’s of flipping a classroom, tools and techniques to do so, and begin planning for a flip. Interactive discussion will center on the challenges and opportunities for flipping, strategies to engage students in the classroom, and technologies that facilitate student learning.

Accessible Training with Blackboard and Screen Readers
Presented by Elizabeth Doane
Session Four

This presentation will focus on how the exciting accessibility features built into Blackboard can assist blind and visually impaired students, enabling them to overcome the challenges they face in an online course. Navigation of complex screens using speech will be demonstrated. Participants will learn tips to enhance the accessibility of course content.

Embedding Information Literacy into the Curriculum: Faculty/Librarian Partnership for enhancing Student Learning

Session Four

Many students lack the research skills they need to succeed and are often overwhelmed by the research required at a higher level. Come see how incorporating new cloud-based platforms into a classroom setting provides students with the skills they need to access, evaluate, and use resources effectively and ethically. Librarians from Gateway Community College will discuss and demonstrate how a cloud-based tool, ResearchReady, can successfully extend student learning beyond the one-shot library instruction.
